"Hanselling" the new born baby - Scottish custom of giving it a silver coin.
Auntie Myra came all the way from Woy Woy and she gave me a coin. This was said to be lucky for the baby and the giver. How the baby accepted the coin was important because if the baby held the coin tightly it would be miserly and penny-pinching. If the baby quickly dropped it, the baby would be a spendthrift. Needless to say I dropped it easily so does that make me a spendthrift? What's your take on that Daddy?
*Daddy's comment - "two out of three tries would have been more appropriate"
